Hello, I'm Rae!
I design sewing tools that allow women to connect to their creativity by sewing clothing that is both beautiful and practical.
So many projects, so little time! As a mom of three, I know what it means to have a busy life. But I also know that when you love creating, all it takes is little bits of time here and there to make something.
I'm here to provide you with the inspiration and tools you need to help you turn your ideas into reality. I want you to feel how empowering it can be to make your own clothing. Your hands turning dreams and ideas into physical items that can be worn and enjoyed...that's truly magical. Let's make it happen!
MY STORY
I started my sewing blog, Made by Rae, in 2007, after quitting my job as a high school physics teacher to be home with my first child, Elliot. I'd been sewing for as long as I could remember -- my mom taught me when I was little -- but when I started my blog, the internet was connecting creative people in a completely new way, giving us a place to share our projects and connect with each other online. Readers were interested in the designs I was posting on my blog, so I started selling digital sewing patterns shortly after my daughter Clementine was born in 2009.
In many ways, my blog is the story, in pieces, of how I grew a family and a sewing pattern business at the same time.
Now, over a decade after starting my blog, I design sewing patterns for women and children along with my sister Elli here at Made by Rae. I've been a fabric designer for Cloud9 Fabrics and an online sewing instructor for Creativebug. I teach sewing demonstrations at my local library, and host occasional local sewing workshops and sewing nights at my studio.
I grew up on the west side of Michigan and then moved to the Bay Area for a couple of years after college. I currently live in Ann Arbor Michigan, with my husband and three silly kiddos.
